“Mom, I am a Rich man” : How to use your 20s to build wealth and Freedom.
Let’s talk about the idea of being your own source of stability and success. Cher once said, “Mom, I am a rich man,” and that message still matters, especially now with the push of marrying for wealth or choosing a “soft life” over independence. #sprinklesprinkle
It’s practical to seek security, but treating relationships like job interviews for support can feel overwhelming. Personally, I refuse to settle for being with someone just because it offers comfort. I want a partner who matches my drive and ambition.
Choosing to focus on building my own life—financially and emotionally—means I’m not waiting for someone else to provide for me. Working hard gives me freedom and confidence. Not having to worry about money lifts so much stress and lets me enjoy life fully.
Here’s my advice: The most rewarding life is the one you build on your own terms. Invest in your peace of mind, your career, and your future. You don’t need to trade love for stability if you work for both. Here are real steps I took to grow wealth in my 20s without giving up my independence.
Mastering your Money: Building a Plan for Financial Success
You Budgeting Babe
Lately, I’ve been working with some smart folks from NACA who introduced me to a financial coach—Faith—who helped me set real boundaries with my money. Not strict limits, just some clear guidelines: for example, skipping those late-night delivery habits.
I always knew I needed a budget but didn’t know where to start. Faith solved that right away with a simple spreadsheet from Etsy. That small purchase made a big difference. Now, I plan my spending before my paycheck even hits and feel more in control.
Setting a clear budget has helped me focus on my savings and financial goals. Every spending decision feels more intentional. When you give every dollar a job, you start to care about where your money goes—and you’re less likely to end up with surprise overdraft fees. Planning has made my finances feel manageable and purposeful.
You Investing Influencer
Since graduating, I’ve worked jobs that offered a 401(k) retirement plan. Honestly, I didn’t pay much attention in the beginning, but now I realize how lucky I was. Money growing in the background? Yes, please! If your job lets you invest with a retirement plan, take it—even a little bit helps.
Now that I’m more intentional with my money, I’m ready to try investing outside my 401(k). It’s wild to look back and see money I made without even doing a thing. Just imagine what’s possible when you actually know what’s going on!
What to Do If You Don’t Have a 401(k)
If your job doesn’t offer a retirement fund, don’t worry. You’ve got options:
-
Open a high-yield savings account (try banks like Discover)
-
Look into investment firms like Vanguard or T. Rowe Price
-
Even setting up an IRA is a good move
Learning as you go…
I’m still figuring out how to diversify and build up my investment portfolio. Tips and tricks are totally welcome! The more you know, the better you can set yourself up for the future. Even small steps make a difference.
Your Greatest Asset is YOU
More than any money tip or investment plan, you are your most valuable asset. Wealth means nothing if you’re not healthy and whole. When people ignore their own needs, even great fortunes can’t fill the emptiness inside. Self-care should come first—fresh clothes, healthy habits, and steady routines matter more than any savings plan. Emotional health, daily journaling, and honest reflection are worth far more than anything you’ll find in a budget spreadsheet. Real wealth starts with looking after your mind and body. This is the path to lasting freedom.
Put effort into what makes you unique. Spend time on your talents and the skills you love to use. When you invest in your gifts, you invest in yourself. Each step you take to grow who you are pays off for life.
One tip that I use to invest in myself is journaling, spa days and sometimes both.
